This performance of SURROUND took place on 29 Agust 2010 in the German city of Oldenburg.

The Institute of Music of Oldenburg University invited Bill Drummond to lead a performance by The17 in Oldenburg as part of the Sounding D festival. Sounding D is organised by Netwerk Neue Musik. Sounding D happened at various cities across Germany including Oldenburg. In Oldenburg the festival was based at the city's railway station and takes on the name Bahnklang (Train Sound). This performance of SURROUND began and ended at the station.

It usually takes about an hour to get all 100 members of The17 in their positions on the 5K circumference. But not in Germany, where the people would be loath to cross the road before the red man turned green, even if there was no traffic to be seen. In Oldenburg it took over two hours to get everyone in position. Over those two hours, what began as a mild drizzle built up to an unrelenting downpour. Understandably a few (a very few) people decided the future of music was not worth the soaking and headed for home. The rest stood their ground waited faithfully at their posts and performed. Thomas Schopp, the organiser of this performance, elected to make up the depleted numbers himself, manning posts 90 to 98. He would make the cry, then run the 50 metres to the next post make the cry, then run to the next post until he could pass the cry onto the 99th person. He elected to have the blurred photo of himself used in the photo field to represent all his repeated performances.

This performance of SURROUND was to be performed on 2 October 2010 as part of the Un Convention weekend. Drummond mapped the route out on the streets of Salford, spraying the 100 stencilled 17s on the ground and taking photographs of each and everyone of them. But only 87 of the 100 Salford members of The17 turned up to take part in the performance, thus it has been postponed for as yet undecided later date.

The photographs of the 100 stencilled 17s are still here for you to view and waiting on the streets of Salford to be used for the postponed performance of SURROUND. Actually that is not quite true, there are only 80 photos of the stencilled 17s here, the other 20 somehow disappeared from Drummond's mobile phone, while he was uploading them.

This performance of SURROUND took place in Tromsø, Norway on 23 October 2010. Tromsø is over 300 miles inside the Arctic Circle and is the most northerly city in the world. Drummond hopes  The17 will perform SURROUND as part of the City-to-City tour, in Ushuaia, Terra del Feugo. Ushuaia is the most southerly city in the world.

The city of Tromso is laid out along the coast of a small island, thus it was not possible for the 5K circumference that SURROUND was to be performed on, to be in any way circular. Although only 47 of the 100 local members of The17 turned up for this performance, it was not cancelled. Instead a improvised version of the score was performed using only the central section of the circumfrence. That said all 100 stencilled 17s were photographed and will be added to this page once they have been retrieved from Drummond's mobile phone, along with the 47 individual photos of The17 members who took part. The group photo has also yet to be added to the site.

This performance was part of the INSOMNIA festival 2010.

Damascus in London

In early May 2011, Bill Drummond was supposed to lead a performance of Score 328: SURROUND around the top of the ancient city walls of Damascus. This was to be part of a tri-nation festival organised by Reel Festivals. The three nations were to be Syria, Lebanon and Scotland. The Lebanese and Scottish legs of the festival happened. The Arab Spring caused the Syrian leg to be postponed. It was also supposed to be part of The17's City-to-City world tour

While Syrians are slaughtered on their city streets and the world looks on wondering what it should do, Reel Festival decided to organise a festival in waiting with the Syrian refugees and exiles who were currently living in London.

Bill Drummond was invited to take part. He chose to do something that he called DAMASCUS in LONDON. He drew the outline of the Damascus city walls on a map of London and then lead this particular performance following the outline on the streets of London.

The 100 members of The17 that took part in this performance were mainly drawn from the Syrian refugee and exile community in the UK.
